Furry Radio
Looks like there'll be a little bit of furry activity going on during one of the forums at Hamvention. From part of the description of the 2008 Ham Radio Town Meeting:
Again in 2008 the Town Meeting Door Prizes will be presented by ham radio's favorite fur-suited creature: "Jixser", the worlds only Hyena with a ham license. Well, her alter ego Julie Fraedrich, KD8AYJ, holds the ham ticket, but both enjoy the hobby. Meet them "both" at the 2008 Hamvention Ham Radio Town Meeting.
Door prizes will be awarded between speakers and at the end of the session.
The 2008 Ham Radio Town Meeting will be on Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., in forum room 3.
Who's going and who's up for dinner on Saturday evening? :)
Good morning everyone! Or afternoon, whatever the case may be. Please pardon my cross-posting, but this announcement needs to be made. I'm posting this here because Tango is a fellow fur, and this election affects everyone who uses LJ.
As many of you are aware, LJ is currently holding nominations to appoint a community member to their advisory board. There are a lot of users who are nominated for this, but one in particular stands out for me -
tango. I've never met him outside of LJ, but he's a really great guy, with the experience necessary to be perfect for this. He's been an LJ volunteer for nearly two years, and has already made countless contributions to the LiveJournal software and community. For example, whenever I've commented on the LJ software in my journal in the past, he's always been there with a helpful solution/suggestion. He also has many years of customer/tech support experience with various agencies, giving him the skills necessary to identify and communicate the needs/desires/concerns of the community at large to LJ's management.
And, for us furs, there's a bonus; he's one of us! So let's work together and put one of the most compentent, level-headed, and helpful furs on LJ into this position on the Advisory Board!
To show your support for Tango, all you have to do is visit this thread, and leave a comment that says "I support this nomination". Make sure your comment says that pretty much verbatim, it sounds like they're using an automated system to aggregate the votes. Only vote once in his thread.
If you have any questions for Tango, please direct them to this thread in his own LJ.
EDIT: We did it! Thanks everyone!

Looking for some suggestions for good online stores to buy ham gear at since there dosn't seem to be a local ham shop near by in NE Indiana.
Also what antennas do you guys like to use for dual band 2m/70cm mobile. I have looked at a few online shops and there seems to be some many makers and types. Looking for a good mag mount for my van. I would ask my mate but has been out of it for so long and doesn't seem to know much. I'm new to this so I have questions.. :)

There was a Major failure of a RAID in the datacenter that hosts like 1/2 the furry fandom. Extent of data loss is not known at this time. Down time is not known at this time, and depends on if I have to re-write websites from scratch (Which will totally suck the big one). The status of things like running FPS live this sunday are still up in the air, as it may end up getting cancelled, but it too early to tell. The list of domains that I own that are currently affected:
thefoxden.com
floridafurs.com
pawpet.org
pawpet.tv
fursuit.org
fursuit.com
furryhams.org
ppmp.info
megaplexcon.org
osceolaares.com
osceolacountyares.org
All mail lists and mail to these domains are also down.
Also affected by this: lion.anthrochat.org and all of irc services. So popular irc channels like #fursuit are affected by this.
And before everyone asks.. No there was not a backup, since this is supposed to be a RAID, which is supposed to be data security.
The people at the data center are working on it, trying to put the bombshell back together from the exploded fragments. Hopefully I will get a status report soon :(

Hey guys.. Guess what. Thanks to the bug that bit me at FCN hanging around BJButtons and Swift. I started studying for the element 2 Technician class a few weeks ago and today I went to a W5YI-VEC exam session and took the test and passed. They had me give the General a go.. But I missed 1 question to many to pass that.. but saying that I hadn't formally studied any of the Gen. question pool. I was fairly pleased.. So I get to sit back and wait a few days until my call sign shows up on the fcc uls database.. so hopefully ill have that by next weekend and start looking out for a HT and a mobile for my van.
You guys have any suggestions on good HT and mobile radios for 2m / 70cm .. but don't cost a tail and paw :)

Just joined the community today and thought I'd say hello.
I got my novice license back in 1984 and upgraded to advanced by '86. Was working on the 20wpm code for my extra when college came along and I didn't have as much free time. My first rig was a Drake TR7 driving an 80m dipole and a TH7 beam. Later entered 2m with a Yaesu Memorizer and an Icom O2AT. Got into packet radio and DX clustering for a while but ten years ago got a job transfer to another state and have been rarely on the waves since then other than 2m with the storm spotters and communications nets for auto rallye and hillclimbs.
Right now my working rigs are an Icom 756, Icom 2800H, Yaesu VX7R, and I still use that Icom O2AT. I put up a 40m dipole yesterday for the 756 and spent a good part of the night back on the HF bands. I went to the Furry Hams meet'n'greet at FWA and there was some interest in maybe starting an HF net. 40m and 80m seem to be the most open for me right now. I'm very out of practice on my code but would like to once I get another keyer.

Hello Gang,
Wolffine and I got to participate a bit in the fox hunt at FCN and it was really a lot of fun. We are interested in looking into this as a hobby. Could you guys provide links or information for us to get started?
Thanks
Wayah
Hey folks!
Any reason to take the handheld with me to FCN?
Is there a talk in or "con frequency" or anything like that planned?
If not, I'll take my antenna off my truck and run witht he CB, cuz I know there isn't anyone listening while I'm driving along the old highways across Ohio.
